How the Server Hourly Wage Calculator Works

Your effective hourly rate is what you actually take home for each hour on the floor. It adds up the cash wage your employer pays, the tips you collect, and any make-up pay your employer owes when those two fall short of minimum wage.

The math is simple:

Effective Hourly Rate = Cash Wage + Average Tips Per Hour

This is the number you should look at when comparing job offers or deciding whether an extra shift is worth it. A $2.13/hr base wage looks terrible on paper, but average $20 in tips per hour and your effective rate hits $22.13.

Tip credits and the FLSA

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) lets employers pay tipped employees a direct cash wage as low as $2.13 per hour, provided the employee regularly receives more than $30 per month in tips. The gap between that cash wage and the full federal minimum wage ($7.25) is the "tip credit." Your employer is crediting your tips toward their minimum wage obligation.

The maximum federal tip credit is $5.12 per hour ($7.25 minus $2.13). If your tips don't bring your total hourly pay up to at least the applicable minimum wage, your employer must cover the difference. That's not optional; it's the law.

Seven states ban tip credits entirely: Alaska, California, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Employers there must pay the full state minimum wage before tips. Your tips are extra on top of that base.

Getting more out of your server pay

  • Log your tips every shift. A real average beats a guess. Server44 makes this automatic.
  • Know your rights. If your effective rate drops below minimum wage for any pay period, your employer has to cover the gap. Keep records.
  • Factor in tip outs. What you walk with depends on your restaurant's tip out policy. That number belongs in your effective rate calculation.
  • Look past the hourly rate. Benefits, meal discounts, and schedule flexibility have real dollar value too.
  • Don't forget taxes. All tips are taxable income. Our No Tax on Tips calculator shows how the proposed deduction could affect you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers on server wages and tipped pay

What is a server's effective hourly rate?

It's your total pay per hour: base cash wage from your employer plus average tips. If you earn $2.13/hr in base pay and average $15/hr in tips, your effective rate is $17.13/hr.

What is the federal tipped minimum wage in 2026?

It's $2.13 per hour. The FLSA allows employers to pay that little in direct wages as long as tips bring total compensation to at least $7.25/hr (the federal minimum wage). The maximum federal tip credit is $5.12/hr.

What happens if my tips don't bring me to minimum wage?

Your employer has to make up the difference. If base wage plus tips fall short of the federal or state minimum wage (whichever is higher) for any hours worked, the employer is on the hook. The FLSA calls this the "employer make-up" obligation.

Which states don't allow tip credits?

Seven: Alaska, California, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Employers there must pay the full state minimum wage before tips. Tips are purely extra income.

How much do servers actually make per hour with tips?

The BLS (May 2024) puts the median hourly wage for waiters and waitresses at $16.23 including tips. But the range is wide: casual dining servers might earn $10-$18/hr total, while fine dining servers can clear $25-$40+/hr.

Is the tipped minimum wage the same in every state?

Not even close. It ranges from $2.13/hr (the federal floor, used in 17+ states) up to $17.13/hr in Washington. Each state sets its own tipped wage, and many sit well above $2.13.

How do I calculate my average tips per hour?

Take your total tips from a full week or month and divide by total hours worked. If you earned $600 in tips over 40 hours, that's $15/hr.

Does this calculator include overtime pay?

No, it uses straight-time rates only. Overtime for tipped employees works differently: the OT rate is the full minimum wage times 1.5, minus the tip credit. For per-shift calculations with overtime, try our Shift Earnings Calculator.
