What are annual work hours and why do they matter?
Annual work hours are the total hours you actually work in a calendar year, after subtracting holidays, vacation, sick days, and any other time off. The standard number everyone references is 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week times 52 weeks. That figure comes from the U.S. Department of Labor and the Office of Personnel Management, which use it to convert annual salaries into hourly rates under 5 U.S.C. 5504.
Almost nobody actually works 2,080 hours, though. The OECD puts the average US worker at roughly 1,811 hours per year once time off is factored in. Knowing your real number matters for salary-to-hourly conversions, setting freelance rates, planning project capacity, and figuring out what a day off actually costs you.
How to calculate your annual work hours
- Start with your weekly hours. Full-time is usually 40. Part-time could be 20 or 30.
- Multiply by 52 weeks. At 40 hours per week, that gives you 2,080 gross hours.
- Count your paid holidays. The US has 11 federal holidays per year (OPM). Most private employers give 8.
- Add vacation and sick days. BLS data shows an average of 10 vacation days and 8 sick days for workers with one year of service.
- Subtract all time off from gross hours. Convert days to hours first (weekly hours divided by days per week), then subtract.
Example: 40 hrs/week, 11 holidays, 10 vacation days, 5 sick days = 2,080 - (26 days x 8 hrs) = 1,872 hours per year.

Does the 2,080-hour standard include holidays and vacation?
No. The 2,080 figure assumes you work 40 hours every single week of the year with no time off at all. The DOL and OPM use it as a baseline to convert annual salaries to hourly rates. Your actual hours will always be lower once you subtract paid time off.

At 20 hours/week, you get 1,040 gross hours per year (20 x 52). Many part-time workers don't get paid holidays or vacation, so their actual hours often stay close to the gross number. At 25 hours/week it's 1,300; at 30 hours/week, 1,560.
How many work days are in a year?
With a 5-day work week, there are 260 work days per year (5 x 52). Subtract 11 federal holidays and you're at 249. Take out 10 vacation days and 5 sick days, and a typical worker ends up with about 234 actual work days.
What is the average number of work hours per month?
If you divide 2,080 by 12, you get about 173 hours per month before any time off. Once you account for holidays, vacation, and sick days, a full-time US worker averages closer to 156 hours per month (roughly 1,872 / 12).
How do annual work hours differ by country?
The gap between countries is huge. OECD data shows Mexico at about 2,128 hours per year, the US at around 1,811, Japan at 1,607, the UK at 1,532, and Germany at the low end with roughly 1,340 hours.
