How Are Work Hours
and Overtime Calculated?
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the standard workweek is 40 hours. Any hours worked beyond 40 in a single week must be paid at 1.5 times the employee's regular rate. Some states add their own rules — California, for example, also requires overtime after 8 hours in a single day and double time after 12 hours.
Here's how gross pay with overtime works:
Net pay is what remains after subtracting federal income tax, state income tax, Social Security (6.2%), and Medicare (1.45%). Tracking your hours accurately is essential — payroll errors are common and harder to dispute without records.
